FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- If you’ve been struggling with allergies over the past week or so, the next several days could be difficult as well.

The 5-day forecast from Pollen.com indicates pollen levels will stay in the medium to high range, hovering between 8.5 and 9 on its scale. The range is consistent with May’s annual pollen index, which averages 9.5. Pollen.com’s index ranges between 0-12. Pollen from oak, maple and birch trees are the top contributors to the elevated pollen count.

Historically, May is the most difficult month for allergy sufferers. Pollen levels typically fall in June, to an average of 8 on the Pollen.com index, and decline dramatically in July to 5.1 on the index. August, with an average of 8.1 on the index, is the second most troublesome month for the region.
