Spectators trickled in - with lots of families and kids in the mix - starting at 5 p.m. By the time headliner Michael Franti & Spearhead stepped out to perform, at about 7 p.m., there was a packed crowd in front of the stage area.

The opening act was Kunjan Collective - featuring DJ Lion King, and MC JHype. The Jeff Tuohy band came on at about 6 p.m. and had the crowd rocking as the night's second act.

But it was clear by the crowd reaction that they were there to see Michael Franti and Spearhead. Most in attendance sang along with the words of songs, and were delighted when Franti came out into the audience several times while performing. He also invited a few lucky crowd members up on stage to sing with the band.

Restaurants that line both sides of the park offered lots of outdoor seating, plenty of food and drink was available, and beer and wine flowed.

The Alive@Five concert series continues through Aug. 13. For more info, and to see the lineup visit www.stamford-downtown.com.
