STAMFORD, Conn. -- Talk about a 'ruff" life.

The Avon Theatre in Stamford is hosting The New York Dog Festival on Sunday, May 21 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The event is a program of entertaining and inspiring short films that celebrate the remarkable bond between people and dogs. A portion of each ticket sold supports the Connecticut Humane Society.

The festival is comprised of two separate programs, each of which is a medley of animated, documentary and narrative short films from around the world. Each program requires a separate admission ticket.

Program One, in the morning, is made up of 12 short films including "Games of Bones," an Australian film that reimagines the popular television series with a similar name, starring the director’s own rescued Labrador as the heroine.

"Useful Dog Tricks" is another film built around a Jack Russell terrier who shows the myriad ways a dog can help around the house.

Finally, there's "A Boy and His Dog," an English documentary about a young boy with medical challenges whose family adopts a big dog whose own physical challenges bring the family closer together.

Program Two, at 1 p.m., is made up of 13 films including "The Lewis Lecture," an animated depiction of what dogs are actually thinking when their owners leave the house; "The Poodle Trainer,"  a poignant character study of a circus trainer whose performing poodles are the center of her universe; and "Second Chances," a documentary about dogs who are paired with imprisoned women, who train them to become service dogs, changing lives on both ends of the leash.

The Dog Film Festival was founded by Tracie Hotchner, a well-known pet wellness advocate and author of "The Dog Bible: Everything Your Dog Wants You to Know."

She is also the host and producer of 10 pet talk radio shows on her Radio Pet Lady Network, including her award-winning NPR show Dog Talk.
