The 50-minute production is an interactive theatrical work designed to give children from kindergarten to Grade 5 an insight into Shakespeare they wouldn't get otherwise. A question-and-answer session follows.
Claire Kelly, Shakespeare on the Sound's education director, developed the presentation with Emily Bryan as a "fun-filled adventure" using 95 percent of Shakespeare’s dialogue and vignettes from five of his plays.
Kelly and Bryan combined bits from “Macbeth,” “Henry V,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “As You Like It” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to create something that pays tribute to Shakespeare’s lyrical range from comedy to tragedy.
Katie Wieland, Matthew Lynch and Daniel Levitt play actors who argue over which passages they should perform -- and who gets the biggest part. The trio works with props pulled from a trunk brought onstage.
All three actors are New York-based professionals who have all appeared in earlier outdoor productions with Shakespeare on the Sound in Rowayton’s Pinkney Park.
Youngsters from the audience are also invited on stage to warm up with the actors and to act in the performance. For example, they become part of Henry V’s army.
The play with its interactive dimension is portable and available for presentation in schools and libraries. 'Shakespeare' toured Darien’s elementary schools and was also performed at Riverside School in Greenwich earlier this year.
