"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" officially opens Friday nationwide, but many theaters in Fairfield County will begin screening the film as early as 7 p.m. Thursday. Fans should make sure they get their tickets early, as some screenings are already sold out, according to Fandango.

The seventh entry in the beloved sci-fi franchise has also broken records for ticket pre-sales, and is expected to pull in more than $200 million in its opening weekend, according to Variety. Anticipation has been high for the film since it was first announced in 2012, with every new bit of information, casting announcement, rumor and trailer garnering widespread coverage in media around the world.

Fans around the globe are eager to see the return of characters such as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Chewbacca, who were last seen in 1983's "Return of the Jedi." A trilogy of prequel films were released in 1999, 2002 and 2005, and though they were financially successful, they were critically panned and are regarded as inferior to the original films.
