NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk police will conduct a water safety day Sunday, Aug. 3, at Calf Pasture Beach.
The event is hosted through a partnership with Stew Leonard III Children's Charities, Fairfield County Safe Kids and Norwalk Parks and Recreation. The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday and feature educational materials, Stewie the Duck, the Norwalk Police Department's Dive Rescue truck and a live broadcast from 95.9 The Fox radio station.
According to Stew Leonard III Children's Charities, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children the ages of 1 and 4 years old. Most drownings occur in residential pools, though most infants younger than 1 year drown in a toilet, sink, bathtub or bucket with as little as 2 inches of water. For every child who drowns, four others are hospitalized for near drowning, and as many as three suffer permanent brain damage. Nine out of 10 drowning deaths happen when a caregiver is supervising but not paying attention.
