NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra will host its 4th annual Family Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday March 6.

“This exciting program welcomes everyone to the Norwalk Concert Hall and is themed, ‘Meet the Orchestra!’ The music showcases all the different instruments and the incredible colors created when they’re combined by great composers,” said Jonathan Yates, music director of the Norwalk Symphony and Norwalk Youth Symphony. “For some, this concert will be an introduction to classical repertoire, as well as an inspiration for musicians, young and old, and an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a live professional music performance. It features the Norwalk Youth Symphony side by side with the Norwalk Symphony — over 100 musicians-- playing Ravel’s famously exciting Bolero, a wonderful young virtuosic violinist playing a showstopper of a concerto and culminates with Benjamin Britten’s A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, narrated by the great Tony Award winning actor, James Naughton.”

The program’s centerpiece will be the 2016 Young Artists Festival Concerto Competition winner Cameron Chase, reprising the famously difficult first movement of Henri Vieuxtemps’ 5th Violin Concerto.

At age 15, Cameron already has served as concertmaster for the Norwalk Youth Symphony’s Principal Orchestra for two years and studies at the Juilliard pre-college program.

More than 50 young musicians participated in the Young Artist Festival Competition for area students at various levels of training.

“We were impressed both with the turnout and with the quality of the playing,” said Becki Christopherson, festival chair and Norwalk Symphony Orchestra board member. “This will be the fourth year that the concerto contest winner will perform with a professional orchestra at the Norwalk Concert Hall,” Yates said. “It’s a joy to give these talented young musicians a chance to shine as a part of our regular concert schedule.”
