NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Seaport Association (NSA) is to officially open its 2016 summer season with a Commissioning Day celebration from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, May 21.

The event, which is to be held at the NSA’s ferry dock near 10 North Water St., is free and open to the public.

The NSA, which owns and operates Sheffield Island Lighthouse, is to use Commissioning Day to announce the entertainment at this year’s Oyster Festival, set for Sept. 10-11, and to bless “The CJ Toth,” the NSA’s ferry.

The event is family friendly and will feature walk-on tours of the ferry and giveaways.

An art competition will requests for artists are asked to bring their interpretation of the existing Walk Bridge or an interpretation of what the new bridge should look like, according to the NSA, which noted that the 119-year-old bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2018. Entries into the art contest must be made before the end of Commissioning Day.

Food and beverages is to be available by Ripka’s Beach Cafe and B. J. Ryans. Tim Currie’s Motown Band is scheduled to perform the music.

Ferry service to Sheffield Island is to run from May 28 through Sept. 25. In addition to regular excursions to Sheffield Island and tours of the lighthouse, the NSA is to host boat tours and sunset cruises around the Norwalk Islands, clambakes, barbecues, a Pirates weekend, and a Haunted Lighthouse weekend.

The NSA is a nonprofit organization founded in 1978. For more information on Commissioning Day and other NSA programs and events, or to reserve the ferry and island for private functions, contact the NSA at 203-838-9444 or visit the NSA website .
