Lightfoot first hit the folk and country scene in 1958, when he was performing for drinks and tips in 1965 in Orillia, Ontario. He has been a big influence on many other artists, such as Ian and Sylvia, Pete Seeger and The Weavers. He has performed at the Newport Folk Festival.
Lightfoot’s songs have been recorded by Seeger, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, The Grateful Dead and Richie Havens, just to name a few. Lightfoot has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and The Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
He has also been honored as a Companion of the Order of Canada, and has had his likeness printed on an official stamp.
