NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Public Library will present a talk by Elizabeth Benedict, editor of "Me, My Hair, and I: Twenty-seven Women Untangle an Obsession," at its next AuthorSpeak program on Monday, Dec. 14.
In addition, Westport author Jane Green, who contributed an essay to the book, will share the story of her life through the hair on her head during the event at noon in the library's auditorium.
Benedict’s compilation of essays, called fresh and evocative by reviewers, brings together a noteworthy list of 27 writers to share their personal hair stories. Featuring remarkable essays from the likes of Anne Lamott, Adriana Trigiani, Suleika Jaouad, Jane Smiley and Jane Green, "Me, My Hair, and I" provides diverse perspectives and backgrounds on a subject that every woman can relate to, even when the story may be very different from her own.
Each essay portrays a journey with its own unique history and wisdom. Luanne Rice, bestselling author of "The Lemon Orchard," said, “Elizabeth Benedict has gathered such wonderful writers to examine the allure, magic, curse, thrills, seductions and sorrows of hair. Written with tender sensitivity and wild wit, these essays may start with the external, but they go deep into the lives of the writers, into what appearance means, and into how they see themselves and their places in the world.”
Benedict, a graduate of Barnard College, is the author of five novels, including the bestseller "Almost" and the National Book Award finalist "Slow Dancing." She is the editor of two other anthologies, and her journalism, short fiction and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Boston Globe, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar and other publications.
Green, a Westport resident and well-known figure around Fairfield County, is the author of 17 novels, 16 of which have been New York Times Bestsellers. Regarded as a “Chick Lit” pioneer, her latest bestseller is "Summer Secrets."
