To celebrate “Stop on Red Week,” the Howard County Police Department released a two minute video depicting several cases where reckless drivers sped through red lights, forcing others to take evasive measures or even stop in the intersection to avoid being struck.
According to state data, there have been 356 fatal crashes in Maryland counties in 2023:
- Prince George's: 65;
- Baltimore: 41;
- Montgomery: 28;
- Anne Arundel: 27;
- Baltimore City: 23;
- Frederick: 17;
- Harford: 17;
- Charles: 15;
- Cecil: 14;
- Howard: 12;
- Washington: 11;
- Wicomico: 8;
- Calvert: 8;
- Carroll: 7;
- Saint Mary's: 7;
- Queen Anne's: 6;
- Caroline: 6;
- Allegany: 6;
- Worcester: 5;
- Dorchester: 3;
- Garrett: 2;
- Kent: 1;
- Somerset: 1;
- Unknown: 1.
Despite a reputation for poor driving and a history of fatal crashes, a Forbes study released last month ranked Maryland as having the 40th safest drivers, a list that was led by neighboring Washington, DC.
As of Aug. 8, 2020, the state reported 321 fatal crashes. Over the past five years, the average number of fatalities per year was at 514.
