A teenage boy was shot and killed in the parking lot of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Northwest DC by unknown assailants who fled the scene, according to Metropolitan Assistant Police Chief Morgan Kane.

The shooting was reported at 2:24 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, in the 4400 block of Iowa Avenue NW, nearly an hour before students were to be dismissed from the building and classes were still in session.

Upon arrival at the scene, Kane said that officers found a 17-year-old in the parking lot with a single gunshot wound to his body.

The Roosevelt High School student was rushed to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead from the injury.

Kane said that the preliminary investigation determined that there was an altercation in the parking lot and shots were fired.

One handgun has been recovered, and casings have been located.

The shooting and subsequent investigation led to lockdowns at Roosevelt and other nearby school, which was lifted at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, shortly before dismissal time.

Investigators made note that at no point were any of the children inside of the schools in any danger and the shooting was an isolated incident.

The assistant police chief made note that the School Resource Officers coordinated with building principals to advise of the lockout and alert them where they could pick up their children.

Witnesses are now being sought, and additional video footage from the area is being evaluated by homicide detectives and SROs.

When asked how she felt about the rash of seemingly daily violence plaguing DC since the beginning of 2023, Kane spoke candidly.

"I'll say this. I am a 25-year member of this police department. I live in DC, and I have an 8-year-old son," she said. "I can't overstate how heartbreaking it is and how heartbroken I am right now for these kids with what we see happening.

"What I will tell you is that this just makes us more deliberate and intentional and our resolve to put our hands around what is happening with our kid."
