Gartner was assigned to the 201st Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was killed in Bagram, Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said in a brief release issued late Friday.

His mother was expecting him home in time for his 24th birthday in April when she received a trunk filled with Gartner’s belongings, his grandmother said. She got word a short time later that her son had been killed.

Gartner had spent time in Dumont following his childhoood in Aransas Pass, Texas. After attending Dumont High School, where he was in the Junior ROTC, he earned a GED in 2004 from the New Jersey National Guard Challenge Youth Program at Fort Dix, then joined the Army.
