Letter: Garfunkel's Norwalk Mailer Far From True

NORWALK, Conn. — Art Scialabba, Republican Town Committee chairman and campaign manager for Moccia for Mayor, is reacting to a mailer sent out by the campaign of Garfunkel for Mayor.

We’ve been waiting for the attacks to begin and Andy’s first mailer has not disappointed us. While we are happy to debate facts, what is disheartening and disappointing is that his mailer has totally ignored facts and has just listed falsehoods.

I am sure Norwalk voters are smarter than Andy gives them credit for but to be clear NOTHING on his postcard is accurate, except maybe the mailing address. Let’s look at the truth:

• Education funding has INCREASED under Mayor Moccia.  So saying “Education –Slashed” is false. What’s has also increased over these past years are the kids the test scores as well!

• Police “Slashed” - again FALSE. We have spent money to buy new cars, put more officers on the street and now have new a motorcycle unit. By the way – According to the 2010 FBI Uniform Crime Report, violent crime is down 20 percent.

• Infrastructure “Slashed” – again FALSE. Our infrastructure is improving. Flooding controls are being installed on East Avenue and more than $14 million has been budgeted and is being spent on road repairs and repaving projects.

• And lastly Seniors Services “Slashed” once again false. Seniors have seen an increase in tax relief.

So what reckless fiscal policies is Andy talking about? Taxes have not “Skyrocketed” as so boldly proclaimed on Andy’s mailer.

Talk is cheap and the totally false mailer is as cheap as it gets. The mailer doesn’t even ask people to support Andy, it’s nothing but a false hit piece against Mayor Moccia. The only identifying marks that shows it is from Andy’s campaign is the legal disclaimer (I’m glad he got it right this time) and the return address. Is Andy not proud of his mailer? Why doesn’t he ask for your vote?

Maintaining essential city services and maintaining our AAA bond rating in these difficult economic times is not a sign of “reckless fiscal policies” it’s a sign of a good leader balancing the needs of our city with the needs of our taxpayers. Causing our bond rating to drop to AA (as Andy suggested in the debate yesterday) would cause us to have to spend more money to pay back our bonds. Can you explain how that is good fiscal policy?

Andy is WRONG about how Norwalk is being run. Andy is just wrong to be our next mayor of Norwalk.
