DARIEN, Conn. The sun was shining bright Monday, but the streets were still littered with trees and debris in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. Thousands were left without power, forcing them to crowd the Darien Library in order to check their emails and charge their cell phones.
At 3 p.m., Connecticut Light & Power reported that 2,172 customers were without power, approximately 37 percent of the town. Crews were working around town to restore power as quickly as possible. Town Hall lost power, but had phone service and limited lighting. Hindley, Holmes, Ox Ridge and Darien High School also lost power.
The Darien Library had restored its power and Internet, and will remain open until 10:30 p.m. through Thursday. Palmer's Market and both Stop & Shops have also restored power. The start of the school year was again delayed as all classes were canceled Tuesday, as was Tuesday's planned Board of Education meeting.
Darien Police Capt. Fred Komm said there were no major accidents or injuries Sunday because of the storm. He said power lines were still down in some roads and warned residents not to approached downed wires.
