Historic Landscapes Curator To Speak At Norwalk's Lockwood-Mathews Mansion

NORWALK, Conn. -- The Victorian Age is coming to Norwalk.

Jim Donahue, Curator of Historic Landscapes and Horticulture at the Preservation Society of Newport County, will give a talk entitled Gilded Age Conservatories at 11 a.m. on June 10 at the Lockwood-Mathews Museum, 295 West Avenue, in Norwalk.

Jim Donahue, curator of historic landscapes and horticulture at the Preservation Society of Newport County, will give a talk entitled Gilded Age Conservatories at 11 a.m. June 10 at the Lockwood-Mathews Museum, 295 West Ave., in Norwalk.

This is the second in a series of lectures by curators and experts in the field of Victorian era material life at the museum. Donahue holds a master’s degree in landscape design from the Conway School of Landscape Design in Massachusetts. He is currently creating a conservatory-themed exhibit focusing on 19th century collectors’ plants for the Newport Rhode Island Flower Show from June 19 to 21 at the city’s Gilded-Age Mansion Rosecliff.

Elaborate arrangements of exotic orchids, tropical palms and myriad ferns dominated the late 19th and early 20th centuries when private and public conservatories of the Gilded Age were traditionally part of family’s living spaces.

Tickets to hear Donahue speak are $25 for Lockwood Mathews Museum members and $30 for non-members. RSVP by June 5 for the lecture that includes lunch courtesy of Michael Gilmartin’s Outdoor Cookers and a first-floor mansion tour.
