Former acting Village Justice Howard Code and current acting Justice Laurie I. Sullivan will vie for an open village justice seat during a paper-ballot election set for 3 to 9 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Briarcliff Youth Center.
A meet the candidates forum/debate is set for 8 p.m. Jan. 16 at the Briarcliff Middle School theater. Code and Sullivan both accepted nominations Wednesday night during one of the largest turnouts for the People's Caucus annual nominating meeting at the Briarcliff Middle School theater.
Incumbent Village Justice Fred D. Weinstein announced recently that he would not seek re-election after holding the position for 17 years. The race between Code and Sullivan is set to be the only contested race in this year’s election.
“I have no trouble standing in front of disparate groups of people and making myself heard,” said Code, who previously served as acting justice for nine years. “I want to be your village justice because I want to continue to contribute to this community that has been so kind to myself and my family over the years.”
Sullivan, who has served as acting village justice for two years, said she recognizes Weinstein’s shoes will be difficult to fill.
“As a woman and a mother, I bring a unique perspective to the bench, and I’m running for this position because Briarcliff is my home, my daughter’s home and my way of giving back to the community,” she said. “I want to serve this community as your next judge because it’s my way of being one of the helpers.”
Mayor William Vescio accepted the lone nomination for mayor and is set to serve his fifth term.
“I’m seeking re-election as your mayor to continue as the navigator during the very trying financial waters ahead,” Vescio said during his speech Wednesday night. “There is little help on the state and federal levels. It is up to the grassroots leaders who live here to keep us out of the treacherous riptide economy.”
Incumbent Trustee Lori. A. Sullivan accepted the nomination through Sara Vescio, while newcomer Mark L. Wilson will run unopposed for the village trustee position left open after Deputy Mayor David E. Venditti chose not to seek re-election after 10 years on the board.
