David Sedaris Plays it for Laughs

Essayist, memoirist, novelist, humorist, David Sedaris, is the man of many "ists," as well as a best-selling author and radio personality. This multitasker and multi-talent, author of "Naked', "Me Talk Pretty One Day", and "Dress Your Family in Corduroy & Denim," hosts an evening of readings and impromptu conversation with the audience at Stamford's Palace Theatre on April 1 at 7:30 p.m.Sedaris's material most frequently comes from his family and his childhood in North Carolina. As he told CBS News, he and his five siblings, (sister Amy Sedaris is also a well-known humorist) used the family dinner table for their tryouts. "All we ever wanted was to make our mother laugh, and she was generous with her laughter. She wasn't a fool, though. She would say, ''That went on way too long' or 'I've heard that before.' Even at the time, I remember thinking, 'I think this is different than other people's lives.' "Before he broke through as a writer, Sedaris supported himself with a series of odd jobs that he also mined for material. These included donning green tights to play a Christmas elf at Macy's, cleaning New York City apartments and squirrel proofing houses. The jobs themselves might have been mundane but in his writing and story telling about them, he honed in and brought to life their unusual wackiness.

For the last decade, with his best-selling books and other projects, recognition for Sedaris's talent has been abundant. Time magazine named him “Humorist of the Year” in 2001 and in  2005, he was nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word Album and Best Comedy Album.  Spend an evening with Sedaris at The Palace on April 1 and, as The (U.K.) Independent  said about "An Evening with David Sedaris," you'll satisfy "the hunger to see cleverness in the flesh; the almost mystical power of the writer-as-seer; and the abiding pleasure of simply being read to." And you'll be laughing. A lot. Tickets are $42-$57. For more information, visit the theatre's website.
