Show business jack of all trades (and Fairfield County resident) Rob Carlson hosts and performs in "Rob's Discount Variety Show," a boffo modern vaudeville show on Feb. 20 at Fairfield Theatre Company. A comedian-singer-songwriter, Carlson and his Benefit Street Band roll out a show with family-friendly entertainment, shot through with music, comedy and acts of amazing skill. Among the performers on the "Rob's Discount Variety" bill is the musical group The Cane Gang. You've probably never heard music quite like theirs before -- because it comes out of instruments made from antique walking sticks! Magician, clown, juggler, mime and acrobat extraordinaire Michael Trautman also headlines. He's performed with the Big Apple Circus at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center and was featured on ABC TV's "Wow, The Most Awesome Acts on Earth." The Portland Press-Herald called his act, The most deliciously entertaining time youll ever spend with a single performer.Among Rob Carlson's many credits is Modern Man, a trio he performed with that included singer-songwriter David Buskin and George Wurzbach. For 10 years, they toured the U.S. and Canada and during this time also released three albums. Back Stage Magazine gave the trio a Bistro Award for Best Musical Comedy in 2002, and the act also received a 2008 New York Nightlife Award for best comedy group in New York. Carlson's solo work has also been recognized. The Norwalk Hour described him as "Serious, joyful, irreverent, reflective and belly laugh funny" and The Bergen County Record dubbed him a "...multi-dimensional talent."
