Annual Walk, Roll And Stroll To Benefit Norwalk's STAR, Inc.

NORWALK, Conn. – You can help raise money for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities this Sunday at the 10th annual STAR Walk, Roll and Stroll at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.

The event benefits STAR, Inc., Lighting the Way, which provides support, services and advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities as well as their families. The fundraiser features a walking route suitable for any ability, and walkers, strollers, wheelchairs and baby joggers are welcome. About 800 walkers and volunteers are expected to attend.

There will be appearances by Miss Connecticut Ashley Golebiewski, BB the Bluefish of the Bridgeport Bluefish, the Marvin Dancers, and STORM of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. There will be children’s activities and demonstrations by the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium, the Darien Nature Center, FUNBUS and Painted You. Continental breakfast and lunch will also be served.

“This is our 10th year of the STAR Walk, Roll and Stroll and we are so grateful for the families, sponsors and supporters who have been out there from the beginning. This event has grown to become one of the favorite events all year for our clients and their families. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy this special family event that celebrates individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Katie Banzhof, executive director of STAR.

Registration for the walk begins at 10:15 a.m. Sunday and the Walk kickoff is at 11:15 a.m. There is no registration for the event, but those who raise $100 or more will receive a free T-shirt, and those who raise $250 or more will receive a free T-shirt and hat. T-shirts can also be purchased for $25.

The event is made possible through several sponsors as well as volunteers from event from Norwalk Community College, Norwalk High School, Weston High School and People’s United Bank, as well as numerous individual volunteers. STAR is a not-for-profit that serves families in Norwalk, Westport, Weston, Wilton, New Canaan and Darien.
