Scofield, who has lived in Wilton, turns 64 on Saturday. John Scofield, the jazz-rock guitarist and composer, was born Dec. 26, 1951, in Dayton, Ohio.

Scofield, often referred to as "Sco," first joined the Billy Cobham/George Duke Band and later recorded with Charles Mingus in 1976, He is also well versed in jazz fusion, funk, blues, soul, rock and other forms of modern American music.

He released his first album, "John Scofield," in 1977. Around this time, he toured and recorded with pianist Hal Galper, first on his own solo album "Rough House" in 1978, and then on Galper's album "Ivory Forest" (1980). He has released as leader and co-leader many albums including "Blue Matter," "Flat Out," "What We Do," "Überjam,""Up All Night," "Piety Street" and "Überjam Deux."

He has also played and collaborated with Miles Davis, Dave Liebman, Joe Henderson, Charles Mingus, Joey DeFrancesco, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Pat Martino, Mavis Staples, Phil Lesh, Billy Cobham, Medeski Martin & Wood, George Duke, Jaco Pastorius, John Mayer and many other well-known artists.

In 1998, he received the Miles Davis Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

In April 2010, he was named an Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

He is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Jazz Department at New York University's Steinhardt School of Education.
