More than 40 New Jersey communities recently received pet oxygen masks, thanks to a donation from Canine Company of Wilton, Conn.

Donations in Bergen went to Ridgefield Park and Oakland responders, while Little Falls, North Haledon, Pompton Lakes, Wanaque and Woodland Park are equipped in Passaic.

Pets are especially at risk when fire strikes because they can't independently get out of the house, a press release says.

They often suffer smoke inhalation and, when rescued, need oxygen. But without special oxygen masks designed to fit over an animal’s snout, first responders are often unable to help.

In an effort to help, Canine Company launched its "Canine Saves" campaign to ensure fire departments and first aid squads have the necessary equipment to save pets’ lives in emergencies.

During 2016, Canine Company has donated more than 80 sets of pet oxygen masks to 44 fire departments and rescue squads across New Jersey. At least four departments have already resuscitated family pets rescued in house fires.

The organization provided first responders with more than 2,500 “Pets Inside” decals to distribute to families with pets. When affixed to the front door or window, the decals alert first responders that there are pets in the home.
