Health Network Names New Director Of Cancer Services At Norwalk Hospital

DANBURY, Conn. – Dr. Thomas J. Rutherford, an expert in ovarian cancer, has been named the network physician director of cancer services with the Western Connecticut Health Network.

He will serve the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital, the Diebold Family Cancer Center at New Milford Hospital and the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.

Over the next few years, Rutherford will lead the expansion of WCHN cancer services.

He will focus on all aspects of cancer treatment including prevention, high-risk screening, research, individualized treatment and survivorship.

Rutherford believes that the disease-site­ specific programs comprised of teams led by surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists will develop a unified state-of-the-art treatment plan for all patients at the WCHN Cancer Centers.

Rutherford is a board-certified gynecological oncologist, who has authored more than 100 scientific journal articles and worked to isolate the stem cell associated with ovarian cancer.

Previously, he served as professor of gynecologic oncology and director of the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Roanoke College and his doctoral and medical degrees from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo.
