'Risky Ideas' Fuel Darien Designer's Success

DARIEN, Conn. -- When the home furnishings store Carey Karlan worked for suddenly went out of business, the Darien resident figured that was her sign to start her own interior design company.

Last Detail was formed in 2006 and now, 11 years later, is busier than ever. Her office, located in Stamford, has projects in Darien, New Canaan, and Greenwich, as well as in New York City, Nantucket, Cape Cod, Florida and San Francisco.

She credits her success to hard work, client service and a willingness to try a risky idea now and then. "I also go out of my way to keep up with the trends by traveling to furniture markets twice a year," said Karlan.

"I don't have my own 'look' that I impose on my clients; instead I try to give them the best version of what they want."

She said she's also willing to finish a project "down to the last detail" -- pardon the pun -- including the artwork, lamps, that extra accessory etc.

As for trends, she said she thinks we are getting away from severely minimalist gray rooms and are more open to color, pattern, layering and an eclectic mix of the old and new.

"I love color and I couldn't be happier," she said.

She added that she doesn't think sisal has run its course but she sees a renewed interest in soft oriental carpets. "Wallpapers are interesting right now--so many great options from printed grasscloths to abstract murals to witty toiles in fresh colors."
