"Everybody loves to do it at the last minute," Baker said with a smile. "We try to service everyone as best we can."
He estimated that he and his associates would probably file between 60 and 70 returns by midnight Tuesday. He said people often come in on the last day, wanting to file their taxes. His staff will work hard to accommodate them, though he said in some cases he may recommend that they file for an extension.
"If they have a lot of information, or there's something that may create an issue or lead to an audit, it's a lot easier for us to do their return when things are calmer," Baker said.
Tax preparation season can be a stressful time, but Baker said that they try to create a welcoming place where people can ask questions and get individual attention.
"We offer them popcorn or drinks. It's a family atmosphere and a friendly environment, as opposed to just a number that you call," he said.
Though some might find it easier to file their tax returns online, he said that there is a real benefit to sitting down one-on-one with an expert and going over their returns.
"We provide a chance to ask all your questions," he said. "We can help them through their problems and be a support system for them. If someone gets a letter, they can come in with that letter and we'll explain what it's all about. If they forgot to declare income, we can help make sure that their return is processed correctly."
Though tax filing season may be done, Baker's work is far from over. In addition to late filers, there are still returns to file for corporations and small businesses. He also acts as a broker for Access Health Care, and provides financial planning and services for families year-round.
