But the couple thinks their new Norwalk store can help parents like them across the area with that problem. The couple opened Kid Around Resale, a consignment shop focusing on kids’ clothing, in Norwalk last month.
“Children outgrow clothing so fast,” Maria DeVito said via email, pointing to a study that found that families spend an average of $600 per child per year on clothing. “I sought a family-friendly solution and, in my new shop, I’ve found it.”
At Kid Around Resale, the DeVitos take in gently used kids’ clothes, have them all cleaned, and resell them at a steep discount compared with new prices. They also accept toys, books, high chairs, strollers and other items children outgrow.
The store takes in items from brands such as Ralph Lauren, Nautica and North Face, but many of the everyday clothing items sell for less than $12, DeVito says.
“The shop’s first, best, quality may be in the fact that its prices are a fraction of those found in retail,” she added.
Before taking in anything, they ask sellers to make sure that all clothes are stain-free and all toys are in complete working condition. They also make sure to clean and inspect all items, and check to make sure they’re up to current safety standards, before they go on sale.
“In fact, my husband and I have made gifts of some items to our daughters … and Sophia and Isabella DeVito have extended their quality endorsements,” Maria said.
Still, the DeVitos stress that they want to make the process easy for people selling their clothing too. They have a list of suggestions for preparation and “brands they love” on their website, but Maria says “Young parents can simply pack up their kids items, bring them in, and receive a good cash payments on the same day.”
