WESTPORT, Conn. – Dr. Mark J. Fletcher, a sports medicine expert and Olympic-level coach from Westport, has joined the surgical team at Coastal Orthopaedics, which has offices in Norwalk, New Canaan, Darien and Westport.
Fletcher, who co-founded a sports medicine and orthopedic clinic in Oregon, is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His specialties include, total hip and knee reconstructive surgery, orthopedic sports medicine, and reconstructive shoulder surgery with an emphasis on throwing-related injuries.
In the world of sports, Fletcher trained as a javelin competitor during the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials in 2000 and was a member of the USA team at the World University Games. He also coached his wife, Christina Scherwin, when she was on the Danish Olympic Track & Field Team in 2008.
“I am delighted to bring my background in sports and sports medicine to support the younger generations coming through Coastal Orthopaedics,” said Fletcher. “I will work with patients preventing and treating injuries earlier through proper strengthening exercise as much as possible before more advance surgical treatments may be required.”
Fletcher received his medical degree from George Washington University. While pursuing a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Southern California, Fletcher treated all of the school’s teams including the football, track, and basketball teams. He also served as the medical director of the Oregon Track Club.
“We are very fortunate to have Dr. Fletcher join our practice,” says Dr. Paul Protomastro of Coastal Orthopaedics. “He will continue developing our Sports Medicine program as we treat more and more young athletes from both area High Schools as well as adult athletes who want to get their medical care here, close to home.”
Founded in 1963, Coastal Orthopaedics provides care in various orthopedic fields such as spine, shoulder and hand. Learn more at CoastalOrthopAEdics.com .
