Norwalk Shoppers Can Save During Sales Tax-Free Week

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Shoppers across Fairfield County -- especially those looking for back-to-school or end-of-summer bargains -- can save some money on clothes this week as Connecticut hosts the annual Sales Tax-Free Week.

Wendy Schwarz of Wendy's Closet in Darien said the sales tax-free shopping week helps bring in customers during a slow time of the year.

The annual event began Sunday, Aug. 17, and lasts through Saturday, Aug. 23. During the week, all clothing items that cost less than $300 will be exempt from sales tax. If an item costs more than $300 but is brought down to below $300 through a sale or coupon, it will also be tax exempt.

Wendy Schwarz, owner of Wendy's Closet in Darien, said the week of tax-less shopping helps bring customers to clothing stores.

"It's great for us. It's an  incentive for people to come out during the season when it's usually pretty slow because a lot of people are away right now," Schwarz said. "It's a chance to boost sales as people come back from summer break."

Many stores also offer discounts and sales during the week to provide further incentive for people to shop locally, Schwarz said, and Wendy's Closet is no exception as it offers a big summer clearance. The number of customers frequently increases during the week, she said.

"Every year there's a lot of enthusiasm for it. And they do a great job promoting it," Schwarz said.

"For more than a decade, retailers have known offering consumers money-saving deals during the sales tax-free week can draw in customers and grow their bottom line," Department of Revenue Services Commissioner Kevin P. Sullivan said in a statement. "I'm proud that we can continue this tradition, make it a little easier for families to do back-to-school shopping, and offer all taxpayers a break."

Not all clothing items will be exempt during the week. Athletic clothing, jewelry, handbags, accessories and safety apparel are not eligible for the tax exemption. Click here to find out more information on what is exempt from the state sales tax.
